The individual cells of the standard MiraCell section (MC) shall be uniform in shape and size when expanded.STANDARD CELL DIMENSIONS

The individual cells of the standard MiraCell section (MC) shall be uniform in shape and size when expanded. The cell dimensions shall be 203 mm long and 244 mm wide. Individual cells shall have an area of 248cm2.

LARGE CELL DIMENSIONS

The individual cells of the large cell MiraCell section (MCL) shall be uniform in shape and size when expanded. The cell dimension shall be 406 mm long and 488 mm wide. Individual cells shall have an area of 991 cm2.

CELL DEPTHS

The MiraCell section shall have a depth of 200mm, 150mm, 100mm, 75mm or 50mm subject to manufacturing tolerances.

CELL SEAM PEAL STRENGTH TEST
Short term Seam Peel-Strength Test

Cell seam strength shall be uniform over the full depth of the cell. Short-term peel strength shall be tested per U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Technical Report GL-86-19 Appendix A.

Minimum seam peal strengths shall be 2000N for 200mm cell depth and the strength is directly proportionate to the cell depth.

Seam hang-strength test shall be performed for a minimum period of 7 days in a temperature-controlled environment that undergoes change on a 1 hr. cycle from room temperature to 54deg C. (130F). Room temperature room temperature to 54deg C. (130F). Room temperature is defined in ASTM E41. Test samples shall be made by welding of two 100mm wide polyethylene strips together. A test sample consisting of two carbon black stabilized strips shall support a 72.5 kg. (160lb) load for the test period.


Alternative Long term Seam Hang-Strength Test

Seam hang-strength test shall be performed for a period of 30 days at room temperature. Room temperature is defined in ASTM E41. Test samples shall be made by welding of two 100mm wide polyethylene strips together. A test sample consisting of two carbon black stabilized strips shall support a 72.5 kg. (160lb) load for the test period.


MIRACELL BASE MATERIAL

Polyethylene used to make strips for MiraCell sections shall have a density of 0.93 - 0.96 g/cm3 (58.0 - 60.0 lb/ft3). Polyethylene used to make strips for MiraCell cellular sections shall have an Environmental Stress Crack Resistance (ESCR) of 1500 hours. Carbon black content used for ultra-violet light stabilization shall be 1.5% - 2.0% by weight. The Carbon black shall be homogeneously distributed throughout the material.

Strip properties and assembly

SMOOTH STRIP / CELL

Strips used to make MiraCell cellular confinement sections shall have a thickness of 1.2mm ± 5% The polyethylene strips shall be uniform and essentially smooth. Sheet extrusion can cause some areas of blemish which do not hinder the performance.

ASSEMBLY

MiraCell standard cellular sections (MC) shall be fabricated using strips of sheet polyethylene each having a length of 3.35m and a width equal to the cell depth. Adjoining strips shall be connected using uniformly spaced, full depth, ultrasonic spot welds. Welds shall be off-set and aligned perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the strip. Weld spacing shall be 330mm ± 2.5mm. The ultrasonic weld melt pool shall not exceed 25mm.

Sections shall have a nomenclature of "MC-D-XX" where "MC" indicates a MiraCell standard cell; "D" indicates the cell depth in mm and; "XX" indicated the expanded length in number of cells. An example of MiraCell Standard section nomenclature is MC-150-30 where the section cell depth is 150mm and the length over its 30 cells is 6.1 m

Large Cell MiraCell Section

MiraCell large section dimensions shall be as indicated in fig. 4. Sections shall have a nomenclature of "MCL-D-XX" where "MCL" indicates a MiraCell large cell; "D" indicates the cell depth in mm and "XX" indicated the expanded length in number of cells. An example of MiraCell Large section nomenclature is MCL-150-30 where the section cell depth is 150mm and the length over its 30 cells is 12.19 m

MIRACELL SECTIONS ANCHORING COMPONENTS
Length and diameter vary

MiraCell sections, with or without tendons, shall be anchored with stake anchors as detailed in construction drawings. Rows of stake anchors shall either be engaged and/or bear against the cell walls or engaged and held by integral tendons against the foundation soil. The size, type and distribution of stake anchors shall be as shown in the construction drawings.

Steel J-Pin Stakes.

Steel J-Pin Stakes shall be fabricated from mild steel reinforcement bars. Each stake shall have a minimum radius, 180 degree return at one end. Rod diameter shall be 10mm, 12mm 16mm or 20mm. Stake length shall be according to the construction drawings and ground conditions. Galvanizing if specified shall be in accordance to AASHTO M-218.
